The University of Michigan (U-M) is a public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 1817 in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, 20 years before the Michigan Territory became a state, the University of Michigan is the state’s oldest university. The university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 and is now considered one of the foremost research universities in the United States. The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) is the wholly owned academic medical center of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. UMHS includes the U-M Medical School, with its Faculty Group Practice and many research laboratories; the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, which includes University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, 120 outpatient clinics and approximately 40 health centers. UMHS is considered one of the nation’s leading medical and research institutions and has received many awards and honors recognizing its advanced medical care, leading-edge biomedical research and broad range of educational activities. The Medical School is ranked 8th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and has the nation’s 10th highest total of research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
ABCD Study at the University of Michigan
The University of Michigan is one of 21 institutions nationwide that will recruit families to participate in the ABCD Study. Drs. Mary Heitzeg and Robert Zucker lead the study at U-M. Dr. Heitzeg has been conducting research on brain development in children, adolescents and young adults for more than 10 years. Her research is focused on understanding the relationship between brain functioning and mental health and how it changes from childhood to early adulthood. Dr. Zucker is internationally recognized for his developmentally focused research on children and the contexts in which they grow up.
Families in the ABCD Study will complete their assessments at the Rachel Upjohn Building and the Bonisteel Interdisciplinary Research Building at the University of Michigan’s North Campus.
